Veteran actor Manoj Kumar passed away on Friday morning, leaving the entire nation grief-stricken. A popular name in the Indian film industry, do you know Manoj Kumar’s birth name was Harikrishna Giri Goswami? The actor adopted the screen name Manoj Kumar because he was an ardent fan of Dilip Kumar. Harikrishna changed his name to Manoj after being inspired by Dilip Kumar’s character in the film Shabnam (1949).

However, Manoj Kumar was later popularly called Bharar Kumar since he was known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes. Some of his popular works include “Shaheed" (1965), “Upkar" (1967), “Purab Aur Paschim" (1970), and “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan" (1974). Because of his association with such movies, the actor was also widely called “Bharat Kumar".
Kumar’s patriotic songs are also widely loved to date. Some of the popular songs for the nation include, Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada, Aye Vatan Aye Vatan Humko Teri Kasam, Mera Rang De Basanti Chola, Mere Desh Ki Dharti and Sarfaroshi ki Tamanna. It is because of such songs also that people started to address Manoj as Bharat.

Meanwhile, moments after Manoj Kumar’s death, his son, Kunal Goswami, issued a statement and revealed that the actor was facing age-related health issues for a long time. He also revealed that Kumar left for the heavenly abode peacefully. “He has had health-related issues for a long time. It’s the grace of god that he bid adieu to this world peacefully. His cremation will take place tomorrow," he told ANI.
Manoj Kumar’s final rites will take place on Saturday, April 5.
